The red carpet carries into the grand entrance of the Microsoft Theater. Cameras flash and the paparazzi bombard attendees with questions. Celebrities can be seen with every turn of the head. At the 47th Annual American Music Awards, the party has just begun.

On Nov. 24, artists from a variety of genres gathered in Los Angeles to attend one of music’s biggest nights. The show began with a performance of two songs by Selena Gomes. Although some praised her look, her performance was critiqued rather harshly. Many fans turned to Twitter to express their opinions.

“Looks like Selena Gomez is singing off key in not only her chorus but her whole song tonight…oh honey… #AMAs,” one user wrote, according to foxnews.com.

All eyes seemed to be on emerging artist, Billie Eilish. The 17-year-old won multiple awards, including new artist of the year, according to cnn.com. She also gave a performance with special effects and unique camera angles. The artist wore a simple t-shirt with the words “no music on a dead planet”, using her platform to gain recognition on the climate crisis. She continued her humble tone throughout the night, even after winning big.

“Thank [you to] the fans, because that is the only reason I’m even alive,” Eilish said during her acceptance speech for new artist of the year.

The arguably most memorable performance of the night came from Taylor Swift. Beginning her music career as a country artist back in 2006, she has undergone a complete transition into the pop genre. Her versatility and ability to write and perform songs were recognized in the announcement speech from legendary songwriter Carole King, according to cnn.com. Her performance symbolized her transition from country to pop by singing “Love Story,” a country classic, and ending with “Lover”, the title song of her new album. She also included artists Camilla Cabello and Halsey in her performance of “Shake It Off”. The spotlight continued to shine on Swift as she was awarded the 2019 Artist of The Year award.

“All that matters to me is the memories that I have had with you guys, with you the fans, over the years,” Swift said in her acceptance speech for Artist of the Decade. “Thank you for being the reason why I am on this stage. From the very first day of my career until tonight, I love you with all my heart.”

Overall, the night was filled with vibrant performances and energetic vibes. When artists from all types of music are gathered in one place, it truly can be a night to remember.
