On the morning of Sept. 19, 2020, the band took the field at the Sullivan Marching Band Festival. By the end of the day, they had proven they can overcome any adversity. After winning Outstanding Percussion in a Parade, Outstanding Auxiliary in a Parade and Field Show, first place in their parade division and second place in field show, the Silver Jaguar Brigade was named Grand Champions.

“Our show is Gargoyles, so it is focused around the mythical beasts that are stone during the day and alive at night,” drum major Kate Boyd said. “Our show music is “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence, “The Engulfed Cathedral” by Debussy, and the Gargoyle theme from the ’90s Disney show.”

After taking home the Grand Champion title in 2019, the band was serious about winning. Their hard work at 6 a.m. practices and an extensive two-week-long summer camp led to a successful performance.

“Everyone has been working extremely hard, and it shows in our music and our show,” Boyd said. “Our student leadership team has done a wonderful job including freshmen and helping them adjust to high school inside and outside of the band.”

Similar to the rest of the school, the band has undergone COVID-19 changes. Masks are required when not playing an instrument, and bonding in sections has been restricted.

“I couldn’t be prouder,” Boyd said. “We’ve overcome so many challenges this year already, and we’ve gotten a full show on the field with limited rehearsals. I’m really excited to see how the rest of the season goes because we’re off to a great start.”
