Selena Gomez shares her story of staying off the internet
Even though she is one of the most followed people on social media, singer, actress and producer Selena Gomez announced that she has been off of the internet for four and a half years. Gomez relies on her team to upload content for her. She does, however, help her team by picking out promotional pictures or videos to post on Twitter, Instagram and other social media apps, all according to inews.co.uk.
“It has changed my life completely,” Gomez said on a “Good Morning America” clip. “I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal.”
The main reason as to why Gomez stopped using social media was for her mental health. Taking a break allowed her to step away from the hate and comparisons she received and spend time with others. Furthermore, this has helped her with struggles like both bipolar disorder and anxiety, which were only intensified by the spotlight, all according to vanityfair.com.
“I can’t believe that I’m where I am mentally, just because of how I took the necessary steps in order to kind of remove myself from that because it’s just not normal,” Gomez said.
Recently, Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefy and businesswoman Danielle Pierson have announced a new website called Wondermind. This website will provide free online resources with content, tools and exercises for those struggling with mental health. It aims to normalize the discussion of mental health issues and how they affect everyone differently, all according to complex.com.
“If I’m known for anything, I hope it’s simply just for the way I care about people,” Gomez said. “I really really want people to be understood and seen and heard. Those days where I don’t want to get out of bed, if I had something like Wondermind—even if it took me a minute to get into it—it’s just there, and there’s something really comforting about that.”
