The shutdown lasted from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, 2025, becoming the latest shutdown since 2018, when President Donald Trump was last in office. Some federal employees were temporarily laid off, while others continued to work without pay. The government did not open due to troubled negotiations in Congress, leading to a mass shutdown. The impact of this shutdown was seen by many because national parks and social programs were not being funded, according to npca.org.
This began because Congress failed to pass new funding bills before the fiscal year ended, a 12-month period for the U.S Government starting Oct. 1 that relates to financial matters such as taxation, public spending and debt. When September arrived, senators were seven votes short of the 60 needed to pass the resolution ending the shutdown. The Democrats’ main demand was to add a bill to extend expiring tax credits for health programs, according to bbc.com.
The Republicans held 53 seats and needed the Democrats to connect with them in the vote, this gave the Democrats influence. The two parties could not agree, causing the government to shut down, according to bbc.com.
During this time, many citizens were affected, including federal employees and businesses that depend on government aid. In Missouri, there were over 800 unemployed when the shutdown occurred, and several federal employees worked without pay. Many of these individuals sought help using food banks, relying on funds and applying for unemployment; however, unpaid workers were not granted unemployment, creating difficulties for these employees, according to whitehouse.gov.
Traveling by air experienced delays due to the shortage of airport workers, who were working without pay. This led to more absentee workers and cancelled flights, according to whitehouse.gov.
On Nov. 10, 2025, Congress ended the government shutdown by passing a funding bill, opening a more inclusive agreement on long-term spending and a guarantee of a future vote for extending health care tax credits. The vote was 60-40, with eight Democrats supplying the necessary votes, and one Republican against the agreement, according to cbsnews.com.
Over several weeks, the Democrats were preoccupied with discussing a two-party deal, reaching the agreement without the assistance of the party’s leaders in the Senate. The House then voted and passed this bill over to President Trump, who went through and signed the agreement on Nov. 12, 2025. This ended the 43-day government shutdown, postponing the funding to a new deadline at the end of January, according to cbsnews.com.
