There are staff who are in charge of keeping the building clean and taking care of the students inside of it. Janitors, lunch ladies and nurses are all tasked with working backstage to make the school a better place.
Many students do not realize how much work goes into maintaining the school. With over 1,500 students, the school can become extremely messy in a short amount of time. Custodians work to make sure that the hallways and classrooms are clean.
“My daily routine is to come in, check entryways, throw the towels in from the night before into the laundry and I fold them,” day custodian Sasha Fieffer said. “I also check restrooms and make sure the halls are clear and clean.”
Nurses are responsible for the health of students, whether that be with simple medicines for headaches or administering prescribed medicines.
“A typical day in the clinic is often busy and unpredictable,” school nurse Cristina Armour said. “It changes from day to day. While we do have routines, most of the day is driven by student needs and unexpected situations. In the clinic, we can treat minor injuries, assess illnesses and decide whether a student can return to class or needs to go home. We manage chronic conditions, administer medications and handle emergencies.”
Cafeteria workers and cashiers are responsible for making sure that every student has the opportunity to receive both breakfast and lunch at school. There is a lot of prep work that goes into making sure everything will be ready for the day.
“I get here at 6:45 a.m., which gives me enough time to collect money, uncover the napkins and things like that,” head cashier Dawn Hammond said. “I don’t have much time to prepare for breakfast, but that only lasts for 30 minutes. After that, I turn in the money and start prepping for lunch.”
