Video game companies have started to charge up to $80 for new games, while also raising prices on their consoles. Many mainstream titles started at $70 once released. The high price played a factor in gamers having to wait longer to buy their favorite games and also buying fewer games overall, according to news.northeaster.edu.
“It’s utterly ridiculous. It’s not so much the price, it’s what you’re getting. If I am paying $70, there better not be DLC or other paid services,” senior Chris Collier-Johnson said.
“I used to love games like Pokemon, but because of the price, I’ve had to limit what I get,” Collier-Johnson said.
Lots of gamers want an enjoyable experience when playing, but if a company raises the price for a long awaited game then some might not get to enjoy it.
“Games are getting way too pricey, and people should just be able to enjoy video games without having to pay hundreds of dollars.” senior Connor Adams said.
Some gamers have left certain video game franchises entirely because of the higher prices.
“I no longer play certain franchises. I should not be paying $70 plus $30 online fee plus $50 DLC to play a game,” Collier-Johnson said.
Others believe that the games are worth their price and buy them regardless. However, the price also makes it hard for casual players to enjoy games and have fun without burning a hole in their pockets.
“There will always be people who buy these games despite the price, but that makes it harder for average people who want a good time not to be able to play,” Collier-Johnson said.
Another point some gamers make is whether the game is worth it or not.
“For some games, yes, it should be based on how much effort they put into it, but for a lot of games no, I think they should be cheaper,” Adams said.
