A 16-year-old student opened fire on Sept.10 at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colo., leaving two students critically wounded, according to apnews.com.
The shooter was identified as sophomore Desmond Holly, who carried a revolver and discharged about 20 rounds of bullets total both inside and outside the school in a nine-minute attack, causing almost fatal injuries to two students. After continuous firing and reloading, Holly turned the gun on himself resulting in his death, according to nbcnews.com.
The two injured students were hospitalized. One victim, 18-year-old Matthew Silverstone, was shot in his head and chest outside of the school. A 14-year-old student, whose identity is not released in favor of the family’s preference, was also shot, and despite their injuries, the student warned their classmates of Holly before finding medical aid for themself, according to apnews.com.
As of Oct. 1, the 14-year-old is now out of Children’s Hospital Colorado after undergoing several serious surgeries. The family states that they are not in critical condition anymore but are still in the recovery process at their home, according to coloradosun.com.
The Silverstone family shared that Silverstone was released from Commonspirit St. Anthony. During his stay, his heart stopped two times; however, he pushed through and has now been home since Oct. 14. He has also regained his ability to talk and function with the help of loved ones, according to cpr.org.
Investigators say Holly’s actions were motivated by his white supremacist content and liking of violent imagery. He also posted a photo of his gun to his Instagram the morning of the shooting, according to cprnews.com.
Evergreen High School took a break from Sep. 11 to Sep. 25, allowing a gradual return for students as well as counseling available for those who need it, according to nbcnews.com.
