Right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. From this came the outcry of many people expressing various opinions, whether they were reveling or mourning Kirk’s death, according to nbcnews.com.
A memorial service for Kirk was held Sept. 21 in Glendale, Ariz at the State Farm Stadium, which has a maximum capacity of around 73,000. Overall, about 93,000 people attended, including President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, several cabinet members and billionaire Elon Musk. During the service, people were allowed to speak out for things they believed in, similarly to how Kirk had done his debates, according to dhs.gov.
Following the passing of Kirk, the Turning Point USA organization’s ownership was transferred to Erika Kirk, his wife. The group had been founded with the purpose of educating students about the values of conservatism and patriotism. After September, Turning Point USA was reported to have received 120,000 requests for chapters on campuses, according to tpusa.com.
People had been posting online, speaking about how they were glad that Charlie Kirk was assassinated. Some of those with dissenting opinions reached out to the employers of the original posters. Due to this, several were laid off, according to npr.org.
Oct. 14, Charlie Kirk’s birthday, was declared by President Trump as the National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk. This was officially announced on that day to honor Charlie Kirk and his values. On the same day, Erika Kirk also claimed a Medal of Freedom in his honor, according to whitehouse.gov.
Erika Kirk joined a CBS town hall on Dec. 13 where she spoke about several topics. She touched on social media sharing clips of Charlie Kirk, with her saying that people need to watch the full videos of his debates, rather than taking his words out-of-context. She also stated that she is not going to forget or approve of the killer, but she chooses not to give the killer an advantage over her by choosing to forgive him, according to cbsnews.com.
