Award-winning actress Catherine O’Hara passed away Jan. 30 from a blood clot that had made its way to her lungs. O’Hara had been suffering from both pulmonary embolism and cancer. Pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot breaks off and travels to a person’s lungs. Even though this is what caused her death, the autopsy revealed that cancer was an underlying contributor as well, according to usatoday.com.
O’Hara started out working as a waitress, while trying out for roles in movies and shows. O’Hara debuted in 1974 when she joined the cast of “Second City Television.” She is most known for her role in the “Home Alone” series, “Beetlejuice” series and the show “Schitt’s Creek,” according to usatoday.com.
“She’s been my pretend wife, my pretend nemesis, and my real life, true friend. This one hurts,” actor Micheal Keaton said on an Instagram post.
During her time, she won multiple awards, including a Golden Globe and two Actor Awards and was nominated for an Emmy 10 times, winning in 2020 and another in 2025. She was nominated for the Emmys following her performance in “Schitt’s Creek,” “Second City Television,” “The Studio” and “The Last of Us,” according to usatoday.com.
“You could feel her love of humanity in her brilliant work. And she had integrity, clarity and wisdom that made her a unique treasure. I know the greats are with her now, trying to pick her wonderful brain as to how she could do it all,” actress Lea Thompson said on an Instagram post.
The late actress won an award on March 1 for best actress in a comedy series. It was dedicated to her performance in “The Studio.” Her co-star Seth Rogen accepted the reward on her behalf before giving a speech dedicated to O’Hara.
“I obviously, you know, have been reflecting on the time I was fortunate enough to spend with her, working with her. Something I’ve just been marveling at these past few weeks was really her ability to be generous and kind and gracious while never, ever minimizing her own talents. She knew she could destroy and she wanted to destroy every day on set,” Rogen said in a speech at the Actor Awards, according to nbcnews.com.
