The Olympics is a sports competition between countries competing against one another to achieve the highest award given: gold. This event lasts around three weeks and takes place every four years in different cities across the globe. This year, the Olympics were held in Paris, with a new sport joining the circuit: break dancing, according to olympics.com.
“When I am competing on stage with a hip hop style dance, it is usually very different than what I saw on the Olympics,” varsity dancer Ryleigh Bridges said.
This year, the sport made an appearance for the first time at the Olympics, with hopes of creating a bigger appeal towards a younger audience, and to add a more modern and urban flair to the summer games, according to usatoday.com.
But doing this did not raise the standard for the amount of young generation of viewers to watch the Olympics. The average age of viewers was in the 50s during the 2024 Olympics, according to news.syr.edu.
Even though this sport made an appearance for the first time this year, it will not make a reappearance at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Committee decided that with the advertisement for this sport coming alive, it did not reach the appeal they were expecting. Ultimately, they decided not to feature the sport of break dancing in future Olympics, according to yahoo.com.
