Most freshmen might feel lost or overwhelmed when trying to find their classrooms in the busy hallways. It is a heavy mix of emotions, excitement, anxiety and anticipation.
First tip is start with the basics and find a routine that is easy to remember, preferably avoiding the main staircase due to how busy it gets.
“There are so many people walking,” freshman Akashith Nerella said. “It’s just hard to get through sometimes.”
Even if it may take longer, having a clear path will be less stressful. It can also be helpful to attend the freshman orientation, that way freshmen can get an idea of the route to take every day.
It is more of an unspoken rule, but it is important to remember that everyone is trying to get to class on time. Walk fast; if others are walking slowly, find a way around them.
“If people walk slow, you push through them no matter how big they are,” senior Kylie Pohl said.
This etiquette also applies to huddling with friends, stopping abruptly, or any kind of public display of affection.
Keep in mind that it is normal to make mistakes and get lost. After all, it is the first year of high school for freshmen. Do not freak out about getting lost, as it will only make things worse. Instead, ask someone; it could be a teacher or an upperclassman. It is always okay to ask for help. Looking back at the class schedule is also helpful; just stop in a safe corner or bathroom to check where to head.
The environmental change from middle school to high school is huge, but it is not as scary as students might think it is.
