West high history has been made.
For the first time in West history, the girls’ golf team is sending two athletes to the Missouri State High School Athletics Association (MSHSAA) State Golf competition in Bolivar, Missouri. This is the first time more than one golfer has qualified. After making it through sectionals this past weekend, junior Elizabeth Ostrem and senior Leigha Kelly will compete for the state championship Monday and Tuesday of next week.
“I am practicing everyday and preparing my mindset of thinking of a positive outcome even if I don’t do my best,” Ostrem said.
No matter the results at State, the girls can take pride in that they already accomplished what had been seemingly impossible before this year.
“It felt so amazing knowing we made history together,” Kelly said. “When DeYoung told me that we made history, my jaw dropped, and I almost started crying. We finally did it.”
