The Clash of the Titans
Some argue that the biggest aspect of professional fighting is not the fights, but the stigma, and the larger than life personalities of the fighters themselves. However, this fight could be bigger than anything we have seen before. Legendary trash talker, and UFC fighter Conor McGregor famously stated in a 2015 interview that, if he could take on future Hall of Fame boxer Floyd Mayweather in the ring, he would ‘dismantle’ him. A spark was ignited, and soon the rumors would catch fire. Buzz began that a legitimate fight could be taking place, where a UFC fighter would be taking on a professional boxer in a boxing match, something never before seen. But McGregor does not stand a chance…does he? I mean, he is only a UFC fighter after all, not a boxer. But contrary to popular belief, this is not his first time donning the red gloves.
Conor Anthony McGregor was born in Dublin, Ireland on July 14, 1988. From a young age, McGregor was involved in sports, fighting specifically. He gained a love for sports by playing for a football program, and at age 12 he began his first days of fighting by signing up for a local boxing club. At 17 years old, McGregor began training in MMA, and at 18 he debuted in his first ameteur fight. He has continued fighting ever since, and has done just as much battle with his mouth as with his hands.
Since the trash talk started, they each seemed to be getting under each other’s skin, only fanning the flames. McGregor has obviously never been one to doubt himself, and that is made very apparent by his entertaining press conferences. He is one of the most dominant forces in all of the UFC, and so him being able to test himself in just how dominant he can be outside of the UFC will be interesting, and if he can win, will solidify him as one of the best all around fighters of all-time.
Early in McGregor’s career, after losing several fights in a row in his debuting of the featherweight class, nearly quit fighting all together and pursued a different career path. What changed his mind was when his mother called his trainer, and convinced him to not give up what he loved so much. After this, he never turned that way again. He continued to fight, and now is one of the most prominent names in modern fighting.
McGregor wants people to know that he is all bark, and all bite. The talking that he does, he does because he can dominate those who he talks about. He looks to keep his pride, as well as be known as one of the best muli-art fighters ever.
Tonight, we will finally know if Conor McGregor truly has all it takes. The tenacity, the fire, and the passion to defeat someone like boxing giant Floyd Mayweather in his own sport. It truly will be a spectacle to behold, and this “clash of the titans” will be remembered in sports history for years to come
