Celebrities in Politics

More and more nowadays, it seems that those who are in the limelight attempt to use their platform to voice their opinions. Some people see this as their responsibility, so that injustice can be exposed. However, others see it as not a celebrity’s place to be getting involved in politics. Either way, these celebrities are looking to take their opinions to the next level, and run for political office of some sort, or have even already attained it.

Donald Trump

It is hard to think that before his controversial presidential election, President Donald Trump was a billionaire business owner and reality television star. Some conspiracy theorists predicted that Trump did not even want to run for president to win the position, but to boost ratings for his television show, “The Apprentice”, and ended up winning anyway. Regardless if this is true or not, it was very shocking news when the star announced he would be running.

Kid Rock

Detroit native rapper Kid Rock has also announced that he will be running for political office, this one for senate. Very little information has been released to this point, but a campaign slogan of “Kid Rock ‘18” has certainly shaken up both the entertainment and the political world. Many will take this lightly, or even as a joke, as Kid Rock has no political experience, and joined in the talks after other celebrities have contemplated doing the same. He could have been ‘hopping on the bandwagon’ if you will. However, Rock wants what is best for the people who he would be representing.

“Senator Stabenow and I do share a love of music, although probably not the same kind,” Rock said in an article with npr.org. “I concede she is better at playing politics than I am so I’ll keep doing what I do best, which is being a voice for taxpaying, hardworking americans.”

Kanye West

Rapper Kanye West went viral shortly after the VMA awards in September of 2015, the reason being is that he announced he will be running for the office of the presidency. While many may write this off as a joke, this is not the same for West.

It’s about ideas. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth,” West said. “And yes, as you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

This is another very bold claim coming from someone who has no political experience. While having no prior knowledge of what it is like to be in any political office, much less the President of the United States, West is a big political activist and is outspoken about his beliefs, which may very well help him if he does decide to run.
