Black History Month began back in 1915 by Carter G. Woodson. He wanted a week to celebrate and promote achievements by black Americans and this celebration grew to an entire month, according to history.com.

Students today try to celebrate this historic time at school, but being in a predominately white town, they find it hard to commemorate this month to its full potential. However, many students find ways to honor their culture regardless.

“[Black History Month] gives me a reminder of the past of what my ancestors and people in my culture have done,” sophomore Ari Jones said. “My dad will send us important people who have made a difference in black history.”
